Music in Film
We're going to watch a few clips from different movies that use music in a meaningful way. As we're watching, reflect on the following questions:
- What is the benefit of using music in a scene?
- Is it diegetic or non-diegetic sound?
- Diegetic: Refers to sounds (or visuals) that exist within the story world and can be perceived by the characters.
- Non-Diegetic: Sounds (or visuals) only experienced by the audience and are not part of the fictional world.
- When and how is the music used in the scene?
- Throughout?
- Under the dialogue?
- Before and/or after the dialogue?
- In what ways does the music impact the scene?
- Emotionally?
- Visually?
- Storywise?
- Thematically?
