Music in Film

We're going to watch a few clips from different movies that use music in a meaningful way. As we're watching, reflect on the following questions:

  1. What is the benefit of using music in a scene?
  2. Is it diegetic or non-diegetic sound?
    • Diegetic: Refers to sounds (or visuals) that exist within the story world and can be perceived by the characters.
    • Non-Diegetic: Sounds (or visuals) only experienced by the audience and are not part of the fictional world.
  3. When and how is the music used in the scene?
    • Throughout?
    • Under the dialogue?
    • Before and/or after the dialogue?
  4. In what ways does the music impact the scene?
    • Emotionally?
    • Visually?
    • Storywise?
    • Thematically?
